Are CDs Dying Out?

This should come as no surprise to anyone, but it was the CD Audio format that made it easier to play music. CDs are easy to use, and at the same time, discs don’t get scratched or damaged unless we cause it on purpose. And they will sound like new, which cannot be said about the analogue.

After the first hobbies passed, and then the fashion for CDs, this format has not gone away. Despite the fact that many years have passed, lovers of good sound still enjoy the benefits of the CD. Moreover, they respect and widely use the opportunities offered by this environment.

Many have managed to accumulate impressive collections of albums and unusual releases, which can be found in vain in the corners of the Internet or in the lists of paid music services.

 Are CDs Dying Out

In the Global Music Report 2021, the International Federation of Phonographic Industry points to an increase in sales of CD records. The number of users using paid streaming services has exceeded one and a half billion worldwide.

Paid subscription music services are great, but not for everyone. If we want to have access to everything that’s new, occasionally look for something a little more unusual without big commitments, and we don’t need to pile up stacks of CD boxes, then music streaming is just the perfect solution.

Unlike streaming, the position of the CD as a music medium is constantly weakening, although the situation varies from country to country. The paid download market is also shrinking. And this should not surprise anyone. However, there are countries where these trends do not take place, on the contrary.

According to these statistics, CD sales are highest in Japan (71% share of record distribution) and, interestingly, in the United States of America.

What is it coming from? Perhaps the reason for this is conservatism. Or maybe because the price of streaming services is too high, if you use their advanced paid versions with lossless sound. In any case, the CD has a future. Maybe someday it will come back like vinyl or reel.
