BTS are the first artists in the history of Korean pop music to be nominated for an American Grammy Award, and many expected them to win this award. However, regardless of the fact of receiving the coveted figurine, the participation of BTS at the Grammy is of unique importance.
BTS were nominated in the category of «Best Pop Performance of a Duo/Group» at the 63rd Grammy Awards. BTS received a Grammy Award nomination last year, topping the Billboard single chart for three weeks with a new interpretation of the disco track «Dynamite».
The Grammy Award, founded in 1959, is one of the oldest award ceremonies in the United States and one of the most prestigious award ceremonies in the world of popular music. BTS are the first Korean pop singers nominated for it. In addition, for the first time since 2012, the Asian singer was nominated in the category «Best Pop Performance of a Duo/Group».
The Grammy received a lot of criticism for the fact that at the ceremony color music and non-English-speaking artists were ignored as much as the legacy and authority of the award. And although in the end BTS did not receive an award, even the fact of their nomination has symbolic significance.
Popular music critic Jung Min Jae said: «Whether they won the award or not, the Grammy Award nomination itself means that as a non-English-speaking Asian artist, they received recognition for performance and music».
