Cyprus has been participating in the Eurovision Song Contest for many years, which is scheduled to be held in the Netherlands in May this year. The best achievement for this small Mediterranean country was 2018, when she took second place in the Eurovision Song Contest with the song «Fuego» performed by singer Eleni Forer.
But the choice of the song «The Devil», with which it was supposed to perform at the 2021 competition, clearly disappointed the Cypriots themselves. Moreover, the government radio station CYBC was threatened, which was promised to be set on fire by an unknown person in protest, reporting this by phone to the police. At the moment, nothing is known about the potential terrorist, and the island police are investigating.
The Association of Christian Teachers criticized the song with which Cyprus was going to come to Rotterdam. The song «Il Diablo» (which means «Devil» in Spanish), performed by Greek singer Elena Zagrigno, was severely criticized for name and content.
The association, representing teachers of religious education, in statement called on the government channel to abandon this composition at a popular international competition.
The majority of the population of the small Mediterranean island profess Orthodoxy and are devout believers, so such representation of Cyprus in the international song arena has become simply blasphemous and unacceptable.
