Is There Anything Better Than Spotify?

There are many music streaming services: Spotify, Tidal, Deezer, Soundcloud, Apple Music, Pandora, YouTube Music and many more. The problem, however, is that not all of them offer the same vast database of songs and artists, and not all of them are equally popular in the world.

Swedish music streaming service Spotify is the undisputed leader of the global music market, with a market share of around 36%. Let’s clarify that in second place is the product of the corporation from Cupertino – Apple Music, which has no more than 24% of the global music market. But the rest of the music streaming services share only 40% among themselves.

We can say that these numbers contain the answer to the question of whether there is an alternative to Spotify. But the answer to this question is not as simple as it seems at first glance. After all, all users have different requirements, they often do not coincide, they are largely individual. For example, someone cares about the free version of a music streaming application, and some of the users are very concerned about the highest sound quality of the music content being played.

You can look at two well-known and beloved services: Spotify and Tidal. Both share the same core mission of providing us with easy access to music at home and beyond. However, in practice they differ in several important respects.

Let’s start with the important, although not the most important for many, sound quality. Tidal wins here, but only if we choose the Hi-Fi subscription, in which we can not only listen to lossless compressed songs (FLAC), but also get Master Quality Authenticated technology, which offers sound quality at a level originally recorded in a recording studio.

Tidal Master is only available on the desktop app and some players, not the mobile app. However, it is important that it be at all. You won’t find it on Spotify. More and more artists are adding MQA compatible tracks, so true high quality enthusiasts should choose this option.

However, it is worth noting that only people with more sensitive hearing and better audio equipment will appreciate the difference in quality. You hear not only better detail, but also dynamics. This is a very important advantage. Perhaps, but not the most important thing, because, for example, the variety of performers (especially little-known ones) plays a big role.

However, many music lovers are under the impression that practically no one wants to pay extra for Tidal Hi-Fi. Basic quality is enough for them, because they usually listen to music on a smartphone or in a car. In such conditions, it is really difficult to make a qualitative leap, and for such people, the quality offered by Spotify and Tidal can be identical.

Therefore, if you have a non-audiophile approach to music, and your main player is a smartphone and Bluetooth headphones or ordinary small in-ear headphones, you can completely ignore the difference in sound quality. All you need is Spotify Premium or Tidal Premium. You don’t need to pay extra.

But let’s sum it up. Tidal can become a serious opponent for Spotify, but only if we are talking about users with high-end playback equipment and high demands on the quality of the sound itself.
