On December 3, 2020, the popular music streaming service Google Play Music officially stopped work. Its users were warned in advance about this, they were sent emails. All paid subscribers automatically became paid subscribers of YouTube Music, which actually replaced the closed service.
Throughout 2020, many users were looking for a decent replacement for Play Music. Not everyone accepted YouTube Music and became its users, despite many new features, a more extensive media library and much more.
Play Music has many reasonable alternatives among popular music streaming services. These are Spotify, Apple Music, Amazon Music, Deeezer and others. That is why some of the former users of Google Play Music preferred the transition to other streaming music services not related to Google.
There is no definite answer to the question of whether YouTube Music can become a worthy successor to a closed music streaming service. Some users are sure that Google Play Music is hopelessly outdated. The quality of music playback in YouTube Music has become significantly higher compared to its predecessor. As for aesthetic design, its interface allows you to see full album covers, while in Play Music trimmed side parts. There are fewer songs in the YT Music queue, but on the other hand, the playlist is easier to access. Google also added automatic playlists, such as Discover and New Release Mix, which help the user find something fundamentally new. Many believe that YouTube Music in this regard becomes more like Spotify.
After the introduction of the migration tool, Google said that Google Play Music radio stations will be converted into playlists when imported. This is because YouTube Music completely abandons the concept of radio stations – instead, it offers carefully selected and system-generated playlists.
It is safe to say that it was YouTube Music that became a worthy replacement for Google Play Music.
