The following year saw the debut of the mobile version and the million-play milestone achieved by streaming “Poker Face”, which has yet to reach the US. The success also started a controversy that continued for the next few years, as singer Lady Gaga would only receive US$167 in royalties to reproduce her work.

In the next decade, Spotify, initially only present in a few European countries, began to expand. Thus, in 2011, he appeared in the US, starting to compete directly with iTunes and Amazon Music, and three years later – in Brazil and Argentina. He soon established himself as one of the leaders in the segment and began to integrate into various social networks, applications and devices.

By 2014, the Swedish streaming service had also acquired Tunigo and Echo Nest to improve the platform’s features such as music discovery, playlists and others. Also in the same year, there was a case of more serious repercussions in a royalties dispute involving singer Taylor Swift, who questioned the low return on streaming and ended up boycotting it for three years.

In 2015, at the height of the debate, two studies concluded that Spotify mitigates piracy but also makes it harder to use more lucrative ways to sell music. In subsequent years, the company worked on transparency initiatives such as “Loud & Clear” and solutions to allow artists to self-publish their songs, saving third parties the distribution of royalties.

Soon Spotify also stopped focusing only on music distribution. Back in 2015, the platform began streaming podcasts, and in 2019 bought Anchor to produce original content.
