The Weeknd, also known as Abel Makkonen Tesfaye, is a Canadian singer-songwriter and record producer. Born in Toronto to Ethiopian parents who had immigrated to Canada in the 1980s, he began producing music at the age of 16.
His first album was released in 2011 on YouTube with no promotion or video release; three years later he would release “Kiss Land” which would make him an international star with two number one albums on the Billboard 200.
The Weeknd has gained fame for the sensual sound he creates which blends R&B with psychedelic rock influences to create this unique blend that’s often described as “anthemic electro-R&B”.
The Weeknd has had three number one albums on the Billboard 200, all of which have reached top ten positions in various countries worldwide. He has also won two Grammy Awards, eight Juno Awards, six American Music Awards and nine Billboard Music Awards.
