Who Need A Label?

There are several reliable and proven ways to effectively distribute music in today’s world. But conditionally they can be divided into two large categories – independent distribution and distribution with the help of labels and distributors.

If you are an experienced artist and completely confident in your abilities, then the label is useless to you. If you don’t want to share your music distribution profits with anyone, then you don’t need a label either. You will not need it even if music is just a hobby for you and you do not plan to generate income with it.

There is a common misconception about labels. This term is often used when talking about companies that completely take over the promotion of musicians, deal with their image, sales and organization of tours. Calling such firms labels is not entirely correct: we are talking about music companies. For them, the label is an important component that deals specifically with the distribution of music.

Both labels and distributors pay upfront, although the latter do so less frequently. When signing a label deal, you may be paid a certain amount of money, which you will have to work off by, for example, recording a certain number of albums. Advances can be quite large. In the case of an up-and-coming performer capable of high chart positions, such payouts can amount to huge sums.

Who exactly needs labels? Firstly, they will be required for artists who do not want to do administrative work. They like to create, compose, sing. For them, the label is the way out. Everyone is doing their job, everyone is happy.

Secondly, labels are needed for artists with a very limited budget. Without money and connections, there is much less room for maneuver. The label is a way out, but not the only one. You can borrow from relatives, take a loan or work in parallel. Or write a killer hit that will spread without money.

Labels will be required for artists who have long periods of stagnation. Or those who always write demo versions, but do not finish or release anything from the work. The label can discipline such artists. Commitment will motivate the release of material on time. Otherwise, sanctions (financial or psychological).

Artists with an age audience also need cooperation. Most of the methods of self-promotion are somehow connected with the Internet, where it is much easier to attract the attention of a young audience. The adult audience is radio and television. Entrance to these venues for an independent artist is very difficult. The label producer can resolve this issue with a couple of calls or meetings.

Labels will be an outlet for artists who want fast results. If they are not ready to wait for years and take risks, but are ready to partially sacrifice freedom and part of the profit, then this is exactly the option.
